DSD Studio, founded in 2006, is committed to modern furniture designs that are beautiful, intelligent and environmentally responsible. Principal David Sears brings superb design into homes and offices through furniture that connects people with their environments.
Sears is constantly exploring new materials and ideas, most recently - notions of modularity. He often takes his design cues from his wood – eco-friendly and high quality, harvested from sustainably managed forests. His designs are marked by clear modern forms and striking connective joints.
Sears began his career in woodworking in California, where he renovated period houses in the San Francisco Bay Area and had a cabinet shop in the city. He then began building furniture, finding new approaches to design problems.
His interest in design led him to The University of Michigan School of Architecture, where his work was recognized at the prestigious Wallenberg Competition. While there, Sears studied furniture design with the accomplished industrial designer Shaun Jackson.
After graduation, Sears moved to Boston to pursue architectural design, working at Gund Partnership and Arrowstreet Architects while continuing to design furniture.
In 2007, Sears showed in the Designed for Multiples exhibition at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City, where he showed his credenza design- a steel frame and panel drawered storage unit on casters.
Sears recently introduced his Cube Furniture Collection- a five-piece modern furniture collection that uses sustainably harvested wood and eco-friendly finishes. The collection is made of Forest Stewardship Council certified maple and a high-end 9-ply plywood that includes inner hardwood plys. The collection is made of maple and maple plywood and uses signature detailing.
